CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Brenda

Herbert told her everything he knew.

Aguma climbed out of the vehicle and came to stand next to Herbert. He nodded his head in agreement when Herbert explained that he had told Sarah to stay in the car. Neither of them had any idea how she came to be where she was in the middle of a gunfight. Aguma seemed to be extremely distressed that he had failed to protect her.

“It’s not your fault,” Brenda said. “I should have been with her. I could have stopped her.”

Even as she said the words, she knew they weren’t true. Sarah was Brenda all over again and when she made up her mind nothing would stop her.

“So where has she gone? “Brenda asked. “Why aren’t you still looking?”

“They drove into the bush,” Herbert said. “We couldn’t follow. The people were too many.”

“Too many?” Brenda said, “How could the people be too many?”

“We are always too many,” Herbert said. “We are a small country with many people. Hundreds of people fled into the river. There were crocodiles.”

The bishop drew in a sharp breath. “Crocodiles.”

“Our guns were needed at the river,” Aguma said, “to prevent the killing. The crocodiles were many.”

Brenda was not so wrapped in grief that she could not understand the picture that Aguma had sketched. Driven by fear of Matapa, people had jumped or been pushed into the river where crocodiles lay in wait. The river had become a bloodbath. Sarah was just one person among hundreds who needed to be saved that day.

“What do we do now?” Brenda asked.

No one answered her.

“We have to do something,” she insisted.

“We wait for Matapa to send a demand,” Herbert said.

“He’s already done that,” Brenda reminded him. “He wants the baby.”

“No,” Margaret said, leaping forward and scooping the little girl into her arms.

Brenda had forgotten that the child was even there. She had been remarkably quiet for such a tiny child.

“Put her down,” Rory said.

Margaret was red-faced and once again very close to hysteria. She clung to the child. “You can’t have her.”

“Put her down,” Rory repeated. “You’re drawing attention to her.”

Brenda looked around and understood immediately what Rory was saying. She had been so wrapped up in her own personal tragedy that she had been completely unaware of what was happening around her. Now she saw that they were no longer alone. In addition to a group of eavesdropping adults who kept themselves at a respectful distance, they were also surrounded by the night children

“I’m not giving her up,” said Margaret.

Brenda looked at the little girl. She was a tiny scrap of humanity with skinny arms and legs, and sparse hair tinged with red, a tell-tale sign of malnutrition. She was just one child clinging to a tiny, insecure flicker of life. Brenda was horrified to realize that she was actually weighing the child’s life against the life of her own granddaughter - the child’s life in return for Sarah and Matthew - two lives for the price of one. She shoved that thought into the back of her mind.
